Perfect for the home network March 14, 2010 JP Vic (NE, Ohio - USA) We have 5+ computers on the home network, and everybody needs to print. I have struggled for years with print servers, and other junk. This printer is really good, and I am extramly pleased with it.
Physical setup was fairly easy, then had to load the software on my home computers. The HP install software for wireless was a bit flakey and gave errors but in the end the errors were false and everythign worked fine. You will need to download the drivers for windows 7 but that's easy to do from their web site. IN fact I would suggest to download the software for all operataing systems just to make sure you get the latest.
NOte: the install softwre tries to load all kids of extra tools, even toolbars to my IE 8 browser. Most of these tools I found you don't need. Just load the basic drivers. You can do everything with the basic drivers, like print, fax, scan etc. I loaded the HP full software on two of my machines and I think it is slowign them down during boot so going to delete it.
This machine prints duplex, which is two sided - it prints one side waits for about 5 sec for the ink to dry then sucks the paper back in and prints on the other. This is really cool. I can copy two sided documents to two sided paper. The touch screen works good and menu's are easy to use.
I bought the wireless version, and use it wirelessly as it sits in a location that is difficult to run a network cable too. The wireless works fine for me, but I am very close to the router. IF you can run a network cable to this router save about $50 and buy the non-wireless version of the printer. I actualy fond the non-wireless version at Sam's club and similer places very cheep and cheeper than here - but I needed the wireless - and you can't beat Amazon fast shipping.
I don't think many need the 8500 Pro version, for the extra money all you get is another paper feed tray and some worthless marketng software.
Some people have rated this poorly, I think generly these people are folks that lack computer skills. Printers are the worst hardware in the teckie circle, and can be a bit of a issue using. Many people hate all printers and would give poor ratings to anything. This printer won CNET's editor's choice rating and there was not even a 2nd place compititor even close. Go look at the review from three months ago.
Prints are great, photos print exceltly - and you can print to the entire edge of the paper.
Cons: It makes noise - well all printers make noise when they move paper as it is a physical process - the only way to really make it quite is to make it slow. This printer is fast, so when paper is moving around you year it, but it's not that bad. The think does shake around alot when printing.
The other con is that the HP setup sofware took a long time to install (be sure to shut off your security software - or it takes forever) and was flakey. I hear HP phone support is not the best, if you need support.
All and all I am very pleaesed with the printer. Good for the home network and fine for a small office, copy, print, fax, and scan all work perfect over the network.
Printer failed after 3 days March 12, 2010 James B. Studer (Ojai, CA) I read the user reviews very carefully before taking a chance on this printer. It seems everyone gives this printer 1 star or 5 stars. Installation went smoothly, and there was a warning in the box not to install with the included software, but to go to the HP site for the latest drivers. This wasn't even necessary, as the 8500 worked out of the box with Snow Leopard. That's the good news. The bad news is that after about 3 days I got a message saying there was a carriage jam, which turned out to be a problem with the printers software. I opted to get a refund rather than take a chance on another unit. I've done quite a bit of research on different brands of all in one printers. I would have given up on HP because of the bad reviews, even though I've had good luck with them over the last 15 years. But it seems that HP all in ones have the highest resolution in their scanners, which is a feature I use quite a bit. So, I just purchased an HP Photosmart Premium Fax, and hope that I will have better luck this time. There are so many who are loving their HP all in ones. It seems that there are more faulty machines being shipped than there should be, but if you get a good one you're in luck.
Spare yourself a headache March 12, 2010 nymike57 Hands down this is the worst printer/copier I have ever owned. Let's start at the top, for some reason when you feed multiple pages in the automatic feeder it always skips the second page. Next, no matter how snugly you put the paper in the tray, for no apparent reason it just decides at times to stop and tell you to load paper in the tray. This means you cannot have it print and go away because you may come back and find out it's only done 6 or 7 sheets. Then after you've copied something and want to put something else in it goes into this routine of having to "clean the printheads" for five minutes. It is also a very noisy machine. On top of that the wireless just stopped working. It also at times smudges copies because the ink has not dried fast enough. But worst of all there is no instruction manual so you're not even able to trouble shoot the thing. HP should be ashamed of themselves for producing and selling this piece of junk. Spare yourself continual frustration - buy something else!
Don't buy March 9, 2010 KAL We recently purchased this product for our small business. The paper feed would jamb with the amount of paper that it is supposed to hold. The print quality was terrible, the scan quality was absolutely terrible. It would jamb/freeze for no reason. There was a long delay, the printing was slow, and it was loud. It turned off in the middle of the night causing us to not receive important faxes. Overall, we were very dissatisfied with this purchase, and returned it 3 weeks after purchase.
Solid Printer March 8, 2010 D. Canavan 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Solidly constructed, good scanner, good print quality, good cost per page and excellent user interface. The wireless was a breeze to set up. The printer does make some noise as the printhead sets up and the paper goes along it's path. However, what do you expect with the rated printed speeds of 35ppm? If you want a solid printer with low running costs, simple user interface, good print and scan quality and easy wireless interaction look no further.
